Behavioral Sciences and Health Care

Olle-Jane Sahler; John E. Carr
2018 · Book · Open Access

A clearly structured, compact text on the behavioral sciences for medical and other students and trainees, including practical features such as annotated review questions and a practice exam. The brand new edition of this compact text presents succinct information about the wide variety of behavioral, social, and psychological sciences that comprise the behavioral sciences relevant to health and wellness.Based around but expanding on the Integrated Sciences Model, and integrating the Institute of Medicine¿s key themes for medical training, the new edition is organized in sections covering: ¿ Biological Mediators of Behavior ¿ Individual-Environment Interaction ¿ Development Through the Life Cycle ¿ Social and Cultural Determinants ¿ Societal and Behavioral Health Challenges ¿ The Health Care System, Policy, and Economics ¿ Physician-Patient Interaction ¿ PsychopathologyNew chapters deal with Stress, Adaptation, and Illness; Geriatric Health and Successful Aging; Palliative Care; Health Care Issues Facing Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals; Competency in Clinical Education; Health Literacy; and Changing Risk Behaviors. Clear appendices review principles of epidemiology and biostatistics. Each chapter begins with guidance questions and ends with current recommended readings and review questions. A complete 300+ question-and-answer USMLE-type review section not only allows readers to check how well they have learned the material, but also highlights important points and adds additional specific information to supplement the text. The authors of this text are experienced teachers and researchers drawn primarily from the membership of the Association for the Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education.

Statistical Power Analysis for the Social and Behavioral Sciences

Xiaofeng Steven Liu
2018 · Book · Open Access

This is the first book to demonstrate the application of power analysis to the newer more advanced statistical techniques that are increasingly used in the social and behavioral sciences. Both basic and advanced designs are covered. Readers are shown how to apply power analysis to techniques such as hierarchical linear modeling, meta-analysis, and structural equation modeling. Each chapter opens with a review of the statistical procedure and then proceeds to derive the power functions. This is followed by examples that demonstrate how to produce power tables and charts. The book clearly shows how to calculate power by providing open code for every design and procedure in R, SAS, and SPSS. Readers can verify the power computation using the computer programs on the book's website. There is a growing requirement to include power analysis to justify sample sizes in grant proposals. Most chapters are self-standing and can be read in any order without much disruption. This book will help readers do just that. Sample computer code in R, SPSS, and SAS at www.routledge.com/9781848729810 are written to tabulate power values and produce power curves that can be included in a grant proposal. Organized according to various techniques, chapters 1 – 3 introduce the basics of statistical power and sample size issues including the historical origin, hypothesis testing, and the use of statistical power in t tests and confidence intervals. Chapters 4 - 6 cover common statistical procedures -- analysis of variance, linear regression (both simple regression and multiple regression), correlation, analysis of covariance, and multivariate analysis. Chapters 7 - 11 review the new statistical procedures -- multi-level models, meta-analysis, structural equation models, and longitudinal studies. The appendixes contain a tutorial about R and show the statistical theory of power analysis. Intended as a supplement for graduate courses on quantitative methods, multivariate statistics, hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) and/or multilevel modeling and SEM taught in psychology, education, human development, nursing, and social and life sciences, this is the first text on statistical power for advanced procedures. Researchers and practitioners in these fields also appreciate the book‘s unique coverage of the use of statistical power analysis to determine sample size in planning a study. A prerequisite of basic through multivariate statistics is assumed.

Nonparametric Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences

M. Kraska-MIller
2018 · Book · Open Access

Incorporating a hands-on pedagogical approach, Nonparametric Statistics for Social and Behavioral Sciences presents the concepts, principles, and methods used in performing many nonparametric procedures. It also demonstrates practical applications of the most common nonparametric procedures using IBM’s SPSS software. This text is the only current nonparametric book written specifically for students in the behavioral and social sciences. Emphasizing sound research designs, appropriate statistical analyses, and accurate interpretations of results, the text: Explains a conceptual framework for each statistical procedure Presents examples of relevant research problems, associated research questions, and hypotheses that precede each procedure Details SPSS paths for conducting various analyses Discusses the interpretations of statistical results and conclusions of the research With minimal coverage of formulas, the book takes a nonmathematical approach to nonparametric data analysis procedures and shows students how they are used in research contexts. Each chapter includes examples, exercises, and SPSS screen shots illustrating steps of the statistical procedures and resulting output.

Psychotherapy and the Behavioral Sciences

Lewis R. Wolberg
2018 · Book · Open Access

Psychotherapy and the Behavioral Sciences discusses the techniques used in neurophysiological analysis. It defines the neuronal building blocks. The book provides a detailed examination of the brain. This is followed by a discussion of the function of cerebral cortex. A chapter of the text focuses on biochemical interactions including neuropharmacology and psychopharmacology. The volume defines such terms as genetics, behavior genetics, and ethology. This is followed by a discussion on the conditioning of neural circuits. Another chapter is devoted on the examination of stress and adaptation. Ontogenetic maturation, developmental, and personality theories are explored analytically. The development of personality is the focus of fourth chapter. Concepts such as learning theory, learning principles, and psychoanalytic theory are fully explained. Cultural anthropology is the subject of the tenth chapter. While cybernetics is discuss in the eleventh chapter of the book. The book will provide useful information to psychologists, psychoanalysts, students, and researchers in the field of psychology.

Protecting Participants and Facilitating Social and Behavioral Sciences Research

Panel on Institutional Review Boards; Surveys; and Social Science Research; National Research Council; Committee on National Statistics; Board on Behavioral; Cognitive; and Sensory Sciences; Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education
2018 · Book · Open Access

Institutional review boards (IRBs) are the linchpins of the protection systems that govern human participation in research. In recent years, high-profile cases have focused attention on the weaknesses of the procedures for protecting participants in medical research. The issues surrounding participants protection in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences may be less visible to the public eye, but they are no less important in ensuring ethical and responsible research. This report examines three key issues related to human participation in social, behavioral, and economic sciences research: (1) obtaining informed, voluntary consent from prospective participants: (2) guaranteeing the confidentiality of information collected from participants, which is a particularly challenging problem in social sciences research; and (3) using appropriate review procedures for "minimal-risk" research. Protecting Participants and Facilitating Social and Behavioral Sciences Research will be important to policy makers, research administrators, research sponsors, IRB members, and investigators. More generally, it contains important information for all who want to unsure the best protection-for participants and researchers alike-in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences.

Handbook of Statistical Modeling for the Social and Behavioral Sciences

G. Arminger; Clifford C. Clogg; M.E. Sobel
2018 · Book · Open Access

Contributors thoroughly survey the most important statistical models used in empirical reserch in the social and behavioral sciences. Following a common format, each chapter introduces a model, illustrates the types of problems and data for which the model is best used, provides numerous examples that draw upon familiar models or procedures, and includes material on software that can be used to estimate the models studied. This handbook will aid researchers, methodologists, graduate students, and statisticians to understand and resolve common modeling problems.
