Cet ouvrage, consacré aux approches non paramétriques et semi-paramétriques en régression, propose au lecteur une exploration, une synthèse et une analyse des techniques d’estimation qui se sont récemment imposées quand on refuse de considérer que l’ensemble des fonctions de régression possibles est nécessairement « paramétré », ce qui élargit « infiniment » le nombre de fonctions possibles. Les résultats présentés ici constituent une synthèse d’un pan très important de l’ensemble des développements de la statistique théorique depuis une vingtaine d’années, dans un domaine qui fait l’objet de publications scientifiques régulières. L’ouvrage a pour objectif de mettre ces approches « non standard » à la portée d’un public de chercheurs en statistique appliquée et de responsables d’études en entreprise qui ne les utilisent pas encore. Il présente en outre une synthèse des méthodes d’estimation « non paramétrique » d’une régression : méthode du noyau, méthode des polynômes locaux, méthodes des fonctions orthogonales, méthodes d’ondelettes, fonctions splines. Dans ce cadre purement non paramétrique, des applications sont plus particulièrement détaillées : donnés censurées, séries temporelles, problèmes de discrimination. L’ouvrage se penche aussi sur la notion de « fléau de la dimension », montrant l’intérêt de l’étude de modèles semi-paramétriques plus récemment étudiés (modèles partiellement linéaires, modèles à directions révélatrices). Quelques domaines sont également explorés : adaptation aux données fonctionnelles et aux données spatiales, par exemple. From the titles and contents of 1449 key papers and books which are listed and numbered in Sec tion 5, I have selected keywords and subject headings and ar ranged them alphabetically together with the numbers of perti nent references in Section 3. Number 1153, for instance, denotes my book" Applied Statis tics". It contains a bibliographical section on pages 568 to 641. Supplementary material is displayed in this small bibliographi cal guide. It also complements well-known textbooks of Box, Hunter and Hunter (No.121), Dixon and Massey (No.286), Snedecor and Cochran (No. 1238), and many recent competitors. Since the methodology of statistics is expanding rapidly, many methods are not considered at all or only introduced in the basic textbooks of statistics. There is a need for intermediate statistical methods concerned with increasingly complicated ap plications of statistics to actual research situations. Here the specification of terms helps to find some sources. Since the ref erences vary considerably in length and content, the number of culled or extracted terms per referenced page varies even more, as does also their degree of specialization; however in most cases an intermediate statistical level is maintained.

Die Frage nach dem Aufgabenkreis der Statistik im allgemeinen kann nicht mit wenigen Worten umrissen werden. Wenn man etwas näher auf die geschichtliche Entwicklung des Begriffes Statistik eingeht\ so findet man, daß lange Zeit darunter nur die Beschrei bung von "Staatsmerkwürdigkeiten" (wie Bevölkerungszahl, Bo denbeschaffenheit, Sammlung wirtschaftlicher Daten) verstanden wurde. Erst in neuerer Zeit drang die statistische Betrachtungsweise auch in die Naturwissenschaften ein (BOLTZMANN, GIBBS, MAx WELL). Fußend auf dem Boden der seit Beginn dieses Jahrhunderts sich rasch entwickelnden Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie hat dann ins besondere in den letzten dreißig Jahren auch die mathematische Statistik einen unerhörten Aufschwung genommen und die Metho den der statistischen Analyse mit einer kaum zu übersehenden Fülle von Gedanken bereichert. Statistische Überlegungen treten heute in den verschiedensten Wissensgebieten auf. Es genügt, wenn wir neben den Wirtschaftswissenschaften als Beispiele die Astronomie, die Biologie, die Medizin, die Psychologie, die Physik und die Soziologie anführen. Wenn es also, wie gesagt, nicht leicht ist, den allgemeinen Be griff der Statistik kurz zu charakterisieren, so geht man doch wohl nicht fehl, wenn man feststellt, daß sich die Statistik mit dem Studium von Erscheinungen befaßt, die entweder eine große Zahl von Individuen betreffen, oder sonst in irgendeiner Weise eine Viel falt von Einzelerscheinungen zusammenfassen. Man kann somit als ein Charakteristikum der Statistik das Studium der Massen erscheinungen betrachten. Non-Standard Parametric Statistical Inference

This book discusses the fitting of parametric statistical models to data samples. Emphasis is placed on: (i) how to recognize situations where the problem is non-standard when parameter estimates behave unusually, and (ii) the use of parametric bootstrap resampling methods in analyzing such problems. A frequentist likelihood-based viewpoint is adopted, for which there is a well-established and very practical theory. The standard situation is where certain widely applicable regularity conditions hold. However, there are many apparently innocuous situations where standard theory breaks down, sometimes spectacularly. Most of the departures from regularity are described geometrically, with only sufficient mathematical detail to clarify the non-standard nature of a problem and to allow formulation of practical solutions. The book is intended for anyone with a basic knowledge of statistical methods, as is typically covered in a university statistical inference course, wishing to understand or study how standard methodology might fail. Easy to understand statistical methods are presented which overcome these difficulties, and demonstrated by detailed examples drawn from real applications. Simple and practical model-building is an underlying theme. Parametric bootstrap resampling is used throughout for analyzing the properties of fitted models, illustrating its ease of implementation even in non-standard situations. Distributional properties are obtained numerically for estimators or statistics not previously considered in the literature because their theoretical distributional properties are too hard to obtain theoretically. Bootstrap results are presented mainly graphically in the book, providing an accessible demonstration of the sampling behaviour of estimators.

Die Pädagogik der Darstellung unterscheidet sich in wesentlichen Teilen – Einführung der Modelle für unabhängige und abhängige Experimente, Darstellung des Suffizienzbegriffes, Ausführung des Zusammenhanges zwischen Testtheorie und Theorie der Bereichschätzung, allgemeine Diskussion der Modellentwicklung – erheblich von der anderer vergleichbarer Lehrbücher. Die Darstellung ist, soweit auf diesem Niveau möglich, mathematisch exakt, verzichtet aber bewußt und ebenfalls im Gegensatz zu vergleichbaren Texten auf die Erörterung von Meßbarkeitsfragen. Der Leser wird dadurch erheblich entlastet, ohne daß wesentliche Substanz verlorengeht. Das Buch will allen, die an der Anwendung der Statistik auf solider Grundlage interessiert sind, eine Einführung bieten, und richtet sich an Studierende und Dozenten aller Studienrichtungen, für die mathematische Statistik ein Werkzeug ist.

The Statistical Mind in a Pre-statistical Era

The inclination to view issues in statistical terms and its development in the pre-statistical era between 1750-1850 is validated in this landmark study. A quantifying spirit began to develop during the eighteenth century that manifested itself in numerous distinct areas, such as mathematics, astronomy, standards of living, mortality, water levels, population, taxation, finance, insurance, trade, and crime. This study is the first to analyze measurement, theoretical statistics, and statistical activity as one phenomenon in all aspects.
